Officials report jump in severely mentally ill inmates; five awaiting Heartland placement

Piper Davidson told the Wayne County Corrections Planning Board that the share of inmates identified as severely mentally ill has risen sharply in recent months. "The number has risen from around eleven percent to twenty one percent over the last few months," Davidson said, noting that the jail currently has five inmates waiting to go to Heartland and that Heartland's wait time is very long.
Davidson said medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available inside the jail and that staff are reviewing procedures; she added the jail is considering hiring another mental health staff member to respond to growing needs. The board did not announce immediate changes in placement policy and provided no funding commitment during the meeting.
