Residents press commission on tree retention, slope stability near Guaymas Trail

During the public comment portion of the meeting, a resident asked whether the SMP deadline was 2027 and raised concerns about tree retention and slope stability on steep slopes near Guaymas Trail, San Juan Passage and Portales. The commenter asked whether the update could include signage or nondisturbance notices at slope tops to discourage tree cutting.
Smart Growth Anacortes urged the commission to take the time needed to complete the SMP and recommended postponing extensive permit-streamlining steps until after the critical areas ordinance work is finished. Ron Johnson, a resident who lives above Guaymas Trail, described trees undercutting the bank at Roadside Park and warned that “at some point, they will come down and take the bank with them,” urging staff to consider hazard-tree removal and stabilization measures.
