Applicant proposes metal roof covering for 205 King Street patio
Summary
At an Aug. 5 New Bern Historic Preservation Commission design review, an applicant proposed adding a metal roof covering over a rear patio at 205 King Street. Staff requested a front-street photo and a materials list and said metal-roofing details must meet local metal-roof requirements before the COA is finalized.

At the Aug. 5 design review meeting of the New Bern Historic Preservation Commission, staff introduced a proposal for 205 King Street to add a roof covering over a patio off the house’s back doors. "The project is to add a, roof covering over this patio area outside these back doors," staff said while reviewing the submitted photos and sketches.
The applicant explained the structure would use 6-by-6 posts (two set in the ground, one on the existing brick patio) and a ledger board that projects 120 inches from the house. The applicant said the beam will be about 10 feet long and set back from the steps, and that the roof is intended "to take the place of the umbrella" rather than to add walls or screening.
Staff advised the applicant on metal-roofing requirements, noting a two-foot flat pan is the maximum pan size and that standing-seam applications should use double-lock seams. Staff told the applicant they will provide a written summary of the metal-roof requirements and asked for a front-street photograph and a more complete materials list before the application advances toward the regular meeting in two weeks. "I'll send you the actual requirements for metal roofing," staff said.
Commissioners who reviewed the drawings did not identify any design changes that appear necessary; staff and the applicant agreed the applicant should return at the regular meeting if the requested materials are provided. The commission emphasized that final COA issuance will follow submission of the additional documentation and any required staff checks.
