Two residents living on West Vandalia told the Village of South Jacksonville Board on Dec. 4 that they have suffered repeated basement sewage backups and that their homeowners’ insurance claims were denied on the basis the cause was the Village sewer system. "He is just hoping the Village can do whatever to speed up the process," resident Chris Haschmeyer said when describing his contact with an adjustor.
Jason Hebron, who lives next door at 305 West Vandalia and runs a daycare out of his basement, told trustees he saw workers at the road and asked whether the Village had cameraed the sewer line after the blockage was addressed and whether the problem could recur. President Richard Samples said the board would "take it under advisement," and he does not believe the Village has yet sent a camera down the line.
The residents said Roto-Rooter was unable to clear the problem and that an insurance adjustor informed them the denial was tied to the Village sewer. Treasurer Mindy Olson told the board she had responded to an adjustor's request for information about the claim the day before the meeting. The board did not take immediate action during public comment; Samples reminded speakers that staff and trustees typically do not respond during that portion of the agenda.
Trustees did not set a follow-up timeline on the record but the exchange flagged infrastructure and potential liability questions for staff to research with the Village attorney and insurance providers.
