Grant County commissioners decline Elbow Lake 2027 law-enforcement offer; special meeting set on sheriff budget

Grant County commissioners voted on Aug. 4, 2026, not to accept the City of Elbow Lake’s offer for the county’s 2027 law-enforcement contract. The motion to decline the offer was made by Commissioner Troy Johnson and seconded by Commissioner Bill LaValley and carried during the morning session.
The board then discussed how to balance the Grant County Sheriff’s Office budget; minutes record the topic as a discussion item but do not include proposed line-item solutions. Chairman Dwight Walvatne and Commissioner Bill LaValley later moved that “any city can sign the current offered county contract,” but that motion failed on a roll call vote: Doyle Sperr: NO; Bill LaValley: YES; Dwight Walvatne: YES; Troy Johnson: NO; Ken Johnson: NO. With two votes in favor and three opposed, the motion did not pass.
After the votes the chair called a special meeting for Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. to continue discussion of the law-enforcement contract and related budget matters.
