Panel asks LSO to draft bills raising many two-year felonies to three years and increasing fines

Representative Chastick told the committee the odd-numbered working group recommended increasing most two-year felonies to three-year felonies and aligning fines, saying the change would create consistency across the code and match penalties for similar harms. "We wanted to increase most 2 year felonies to 3 years and increase the fine to $5,000," he said.
Committee members approved a bill-draft request to implement those changes. The proposal also includes augmenting fines in several categories and raising fines for some public-official offenses to $10,000. LSO staff noted the drafts will need to identify exceptions and potential collateral consequences before final language is prepared.
