Council rejects Hemet Firefighters Association MOU, sends it back for renegotiation

The Hemet City Council voted on Aug. 11 to deny a proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Hemet Fire Fighters Association and send it back for renegotiation after council members raised legal and fiscal concerns.
Public commenter Anne Smith urged caution, saying the proposed MOU could limit the council’s future options and expose the city to risk. During council deliberations several members questioned provisions including a ‘‘me‑too’’ clause tying other bargaining units’ economic adjustments to this MOU, the increase in minimum staffing levels and apparent drafting errors in the redline draft. "I don't believe one employee group's compensation should automatically determine another group's compensation without counsel separately evaluating the need or the cost," one council member said during debate.
A motion to deny the MOU carried; the mayor announced the MOU will return for further negotiation. Council directed staff and the city attorney to correct drafting errors and provide a clean version for subsequent consideration.
