The Hemet City Council on Aug. 11 approved using Janssen opioid‑settlement money to expand wellness services for police and public‑safety staff.
Captain Brock told the council the city has received about $530,000 from the Janssen settlement since 2022 and that the funds are restricted to education, recovery and wellness initiatives. "The 2022 allotment in the amount of $95,000 needs to be encumbered by the end of this fiscal year," he said, proposing a wellness room, on‑site mental‑health services and continuation of peer support and gym access for sworn and professional staff. Council voted 5‑0 to approve the expenditure and program plan.
Council members asked whether the funds support public outreach as well as internal wellness; Captain Brock said the settlement allows a range of education and support services and that staff would seek models used by other California agencies.
