Council hears plan for CSX depot demolition; caboose to be donated and moved for local display

Staff updated council on long-running negotiations with CSX over the downtown depot and adjacent parking. Staff said the railroad intends to demolish the depot between August and October and that CSX agreed to clean, prime and paint the caboose and allow the town to take ownership for one dollar: "And they would, allow us to take ownership for a dollar."
Staff described lease terms that would permit expanded downtown parking after demolition and noted CSX set basic fencing and trespassing signage requirements. Councilors asked for clarification on the parcels included on maps and about the number and location of parking spaces. Staff estimated approximately 63 parking spots along Wilkes Avenue would be available when the depot area is repurposed.
