Rutherford County to keep evaluating GRAIL cancer-screening option while narrowing other bid choices

Rutherford County purchasing and benefits staff told commissioners that a broad request for proposals returned numerous point-solution vendors and left four outstanding issues to resolve, including whether to add a cancer-screening product called GRAIL to the county health plan. "GRAIL is a cancer-specific point solution priced at $799 per completed test," staff said, noting the tests would be billed to the county plan and that the vendor offers member support services in addition to testing.
Staff recommended rejecting most point-solution bids for now but continuing with a focused evaluation of GRAIL to determine eligibility, administrative integration and cost-effectiveness. "This is not a quick fix," a staff presenter said, adding that any effect on claims would likely materialize over a longer term and that the county should monitor results if added. Commissioners voted to authorize staff to continue conversations and, if necessary, proceed with contract negotiations before returning with a formal award recommendation.
