Police report: ghost gun seizure, DWI checkpoint and rising traffic incidents

Wall Township's police chief summarized the department’s recent activity, citing a busy summer for calls for service and several notable incidents. Between July 15 and the meeting date the department reported 1,563 motor vehicle stops (about 800 summonses), 237 motor vehicle accidents — 8 requiring extrication and 75 with injuries — and one fatality on Highway 138 in New Bedford. The department responded to 2,193 calls and made 69 arrests, 42 of which were for driving while intoxicated.
The chief also described an Aug. 3 traffic stop on I‑195 that led to the seizure of an AR‑15‑style firearm with loaded magazines and hollow‑point ammunition; the firearm had no serial number and was described in the meeting as a "ghost gun." Two people from Toms River, an 18‑year‑old and a 47‑year‑old, were arrested on charges including possession of an unserialized firearm.
"We will find you, and we will do everything in our power to make sure that you're brought to justice," the chief said about enforcement of retail crime and shoplifting issues affecting local businesses. The department also noted the upcoming DWI checkpoint on Aug. 14 from 8 p.m. to midnight on Highway 138 at Maxwell Road in coordination with the Monmouth County DWI Task Force.
The report emphasized continuing traffic enforcement and community policing efforts after a series of summer incidents and one recent fatal crash.
