Newark gets new surface movement radar as FAA highlights nationwide modernization progress

The Secretary opened a dedication at Newark Liberty International Airport to unveil a newly installed surface movement radar and said the nationwide FAA modernization program is moving ‘‘at historic speeds.’' He noted that Congress provided roughly $12.5 billion for portions of the build and gave a summary of recent hardware upgrades, saying, "We have installed 96 surface awareness systems like the one we are going to deploy today, here at Newark." The event included remarks from FAA Administrator Brian Bedford and Port Authority leaders.
Brian Bedford, the FAA administrator, described Newark's unit as the fifth such deployment and said the agency plans further rollouts to its busiest airports. "We've deployed 4 radars at 3 key sites. We'll deploy 53 of these surface movement radars across the country at our top 44 busiest airports in The United States," Bedford said. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole and Executive Director Catherine Garcia emphasized parallel airport investments and local workforce training tied to the equipment deployments.
