Organizers of the Southern Walk to Freedom told the Alamo City Commission that Alamo will host the event’s kickoff and invited residents to participate in a weekend pilgrimage set for Feb. 27 through March 1, 2026. The walk is intended as a symbolic retracing of routes taken by people of African descent seeking freedom and to highlight local sites of refuge.
“We were so, pleased to be able to plan this event for 2026, which will happen on, on a weekend this year, February 27 through March 1,” an organizer said during the meeting. The presenter described the event as both a remembrance of historical migration and as a living educational experience aimed at teaching local history and preserving family legacies tied to sites such as the Weber Ranch cemetery.
Organizers asked the commission to allow the city to serve as a staging point and to continue supporting the event annually. Commissioners acknowledged the invitation during general announcements and thanked organizers for bringing the initiative to Alamo.
