County Chief Executive Officer Bill Everett told the commission that the Department of Revenue's latest figures show Anaconda-Deer Lodge County's taxable valuation surpassed $2,000,000,000 for the first time, a 26% increase over last year.
"This is the first time we actually crossed over $2,000,000,000.00 in taxable assets in our county, which is a 26% increase from last year," Everett said. He noted mills—used to calculate tax revenue—moved from about $14,000 a decade ago to over $33,000 per mill this year. Everett said the rise should strengthen the county's tax base and could allow commissioners to consider mill reductions, but cautioned staff must still confirm classification changes affecting rentals before finalizing decisions.
Commissioners voted to set the public hearing on the FY2026–27 annual budget for Aug. 25, 2026 (motion by Commissioner Beaudette; seconded by Commissioner Gates; carried 4-0). Officials said they will continue refining figures before the hearing.
