The Village of South Jacksonville Board approved three tourism grant applications during the Feb. 5 meeting, providing a combined $30,000 to local event organizers.
Trustee Paula Belobrajdic‑Stewart introduced the Rotary Club of Jacksonville’s $10,000 grant request for a bass fishing tournament and trustees voted in favor. Trustees also approved a $5,000 grant to the Jacksonville Citizens Police Academy Alumni for their second annual bass fishing tournament. Ken Dobson, speaking for the Jacksonville Speedway, told trustees the Speedway planned 16 nights of racing and that village support helps bring events such as the World of Outlaws to the facility; the board approved a $15,000 grant for the speedway by unanimous roll call.
Trustees noted the grants support tourism and hotel stays that benefit the local economy and agreed the funding reflected prior practice of village sponsorship for community events.
