The Board of Mayor and Aldermen on June 11 authorized the city to participate in the Tennessee Downtowns Program and approved seeking a USDA Rural Business Development Grant to support a downtown development strategic plan.
Recorder Jim E. Garland said the Chamber is pursuing grants for downtown improvements and that the city has participated in the Tennessee Downtowns education program in the past. On a separate item Mayor Terry F. Bell explained the development district can recommend two cities for the USDA grant; the board noted the grant is 100% funded with no local match and is a five-year program that would help prepare a strategic plan for downtown improvements. Alderman Keith Smith moved to approve participation in the Tennessee Downtowns Program; Alderman Donna Butler moved approval of the USDA grant application (Resolution #2026-007); both motions carried.
Minutes do not provide the proposed project scope or consultant lists; staff and the Chamber will likely pursue the application and associated grant materials after authorization.
