NRCS to fund more than $50 million for Gold Wash flood-protection work, county signs agreement

Todd (speaker 17), the county engineer/public-works representative, told the commission that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has agreed to provide more than $50,000,000 to construct a detention-basin dam on Gold Wash upstream of Hurricane and to fund related erosion-control work through the town. He said NRCS often funds 100% of construction and technical assistance on projects of this type but requires local permitting, property-rights acquisition and any bridge or culvert enlargement costs to be handled by local governments.
Todd said Hurricane City has agreed to assume costs where required and that the agreement moves the project into the construction phase after completion of the environmental review. The board approved the supplemental watershed-plan agreement and authorized staff to proceed with construction planning.
