Planning staff to permit fire, police and EMS across zones; design standards to be considered later
Summary
Staff proposed adding government protective services (fire, police, EMS and 911 centers) as permitted uses in all zoning districts so essential public-safety facilities can be sited where needed; the board asked staff to return with potential design and noise-mitigation standards.

Staff recommended adding "government protective services" to the permitted-use table so police stations, fire stations and EMS/911 centers could be sited in any zoning district where community need exists.
Nathan Pennington said the change is intended to remove a barrier to siting critical public-safety facilities and help ensure coverage for residents and visitors. "For the safety of county visitors and residents, government protective services needs to be permitted in all zoning districts," he said.
Board members pressed staff on whether sound or enclosure standards proposed for data centers would also apply to government facilities such as fire stations, noting weekly generator testing and 24/7 operations can be disruptive. Pennington said staff did not propose design or operation standards for protective services at this time but will consult with emergency-services staff and return with recommendations.
