Director says DAC, Pine Street cycle track and Lilly Foundation grant remain priorities; 'You Are Beautiful' sign stored

In the director’s report Skyler said the DAC project at 5th and Pine (the Memorial Hospital site) is in a 90-day design period and moving toward construction documents. "Still working on 268 apartments there and theoretically somewhere around 11,000 square feet of retail," he said, describing ongoing design and financing steps.
Skyler also said Pine Street will be redesigned to include a separated, grade-separated "cycle track" as part of a broader streetscape plan. He reported redevelopment has secured approximately $3,700,000 from the Lilly Foundation for Northwest Indiana Thrive to help fund gateway improvements and connections from the train station to the National Park trails. On the You Are Beautiful sign, Skyler said the sign is repainted, coated and in a safe storage location and will be redeployed when scheduling allows.
Skyler said the commission remains focused on larger projects that add permanent residents downtown and urged patience while higher-priority construction and financing tasks advance. Commissioners praised downtown growth and flagged retail needs to serve new residents.
