Redevelopment commission approves façade grants for Franklin Street businesses

The Michigan City Redevelopment Commission voted to approve façade improvements for several Franklin Street properties, advancing a series of small-business reinvestments aimed at improving the corridor’s appearance.

Director Skyler introduced the item for 2201 Franklin and a project manager, Melissa Brinkley, described exterior work for three businesses. "These businesses have been part of the community for decades, and we're excited about the opportunity to reinvest in these properties and continue that commitment to Michigan City," Brinkley said, outlining proposed new overhead doors, awnings, signage, lighting and landscaping.

The commission approved a resolution authorizing a not-to-exceed $30,000 façade grant for 2201 Franklin. Commissioners subsequently approved a not-to-exceed $30,000 façade grant for 2308 Franklin Street, where Skyler said the owner has invested about $83,000 in the property. The board also approved façade work for 2215 Franklin Street (the tint/glass business) intended to replace fading signage and update the storefront.

Skyler said the commission has expanded tools into the south-of-11th Street corridor to support more visible, gateway-facing improvements. "It's kind of the first entrance into the Franklin Street corridor," he said, arguing those projects shape first impressions for downtown visitors.

The commission took each grant by motion and voice vote; each motion carried. The approvals will allow property owners and contractors to proceed with the described façade work, subject to standard program terms and final program documentation.
