Mayor Joe Behnken proposed raising the Village of New Athens sales tax to help offset increases in employee health insurance costs at the Oct. 21 board meeting. “It would generate $56,736 more in our share of sales tax and would help to offset the increase of the employee’s health insurance premium,” Behnken said, and he told trustees October was the last meeting this year in which the board could advance the change for action before the April 1, 2025 filing deadline.
Trustee Newbold moved to approve the tax increase and Trustee Politsch seconded. The motion passed with all trustees present voting aye except Trustee Feder, who voted no. The board directed staff to draft an ordinance to be considered at the Nov. 4 regular meeting; the ordinance, if adopted, was announced as intended to take effect July 1, 2025. The board did not specify the percentage increase in the meeting minutes; that percentage will be included in the ordinance filed for the November meeting.
