Peckham asks Boscawen planning board to allow broader phasing at Queen Street pit

Peckham Materials requested a change to the excavation permit for its Queen Street pit to allow larger or different phasing to access the back of the site. At the July 7 Planning Board meeting, Jason Kappel, Peckham’s director of technical services, said the company wants flexibility to work two 10‑acre areas at once or to move to a single 20‑acre phase to avoid creating a large hole that would impede moving material to the crushing plant.
Kappel spoke with Peckham colleagues Jon Crowley and surveyor Tim Bernier and said the company would not seek to alter the AOT limits and already holds a reclamation bond. Underwood Engineers conducts the town’s annual inspections of gravel pits; Peckham welcomed inspections and plans to submit a formal letter requesting an amendment to its excavation permit and a site‑plan amendment for the Planning Board’s next meeting. The request followed the site’s prior phasing rules, adopted after a previous owner mined outside permitted areas in 2015.
