Public Works reports smooth solid-waste transition, flags Well 4 pump repairs

Sam Christensen, the city’s Public Works Director, told the Jan. 9 strategic planning session that the transition to a new garbage contractor has been successful and highlighted several operational items the department will address.
"The transition to Ace for garbage services has gone well," Christensen said, and staff praised the contractor for responsive driver reporting and customer service. Christensen also reported steady engagement in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program and said the Police Department will repurpose some replaced radios for CERT use to improve communications.
Christensen described a needed repair at Well 4: a broken suction screen and a missing pump-shaft bearing that must be fixed to ensure long-term water quality for residents. He said Water and Storm Drain personnel are working to improve accountability, safety, efficiency, teamwork and site beautification across city properties. The presentation identified ongoing maintenance and capital needs that will inform the coming budget discussions.
The Public Works update was presented as part of a larger packet of strategic planning briefings and did not include a vote or final decision on capital funding at the session.
