Arcola adopts 2021 International Property Maintenance Code and 2023 National Electric Code

The Arcola City Council voted to adopt the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code and to update related city codes, including the 2023 National Electric Code and other referenced standards.
Police Chief Erin Clark Bryant told council that the city's code enforcement contractor, Safeco, recommended updating the property maintenance code to the 2021 edition. Chief Bryant said the city needed to update codes adopted in 2015 to remain consistent and to codify earlier fire-code adoptions.
"So with that, we said we needed to update all our other codes from 2015 to get in line with everything," Chief Bryant said. Council moved and seconded the adoption and approved it by voice vote.
The update will codify existing fire-code adoptions and bring electrical and building codes to the more current national editions. Staff indicated the changes were intended to provide clearer enforcement standards and to harmonize city requirements with regional practice.
