Presenters told the commission that Lake George has warmed at the surface by roughly a couple of degrees since 1980 and that greater differences between surface and deep temperatures strengthen stratification—conditions that favor cyanobacteria and reduce mixing. The researcher said this makes late-season low-oxygen pockets more likely and that oxygen below about 2 milligrams per liter can stress fish and, under anoxic sediment conditions, contribute to phosphorus release.
To address these dynamics the institute is compiling a high-resolution nutrient budget that combines stream loading, deep-water phosphorus measurements, groundwater and atmospheric deposition to estimate sources and test the potential benefits of interventions such as septic upgrades or bioreactors. "Water in the lake takes about 5 to 7 years," the presenter said, underscoring that management actions can take years to show measurable changes.
