The Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education on Aug. 11 authorized staff to publish a corrected 2026–27 budget and scheduled a corrected-budget hearing for Sept. 8, 2026, after hearing an updated presentation of revenue and expense projections.
Finance staff said final alignment checks after the state submission revealed category misallocations — principally among supplemental general, capital outlay and bond & interest lines — that require republishing the public notice. "I am here to ask today that you guys consider having a corrected budget hearing on September and adoption on 09/08/2026," Miss Robinson told the board, explaining that staff found alignment errors after finalizing the numbers with state officials.
Assistant Superintendent Lisa Walker and Miss Robinson outlined district revenue sources — federal funds, state aid and local taxes — and noted a projected per‑pupil state aid increase that yields roughly $3.7 million under current enrollment estimates (about 20,500 students). They also said a recently added estimate of about $200,000 in board legal fees widened the district's projected gap between revenues and expenses to roughly $12.1 million.
Board members pressed for clarity on mill‑levy mechanics, maintenance‑of‑effort calculations for special education and what a single mill raises in Wyandotte County. Staff emphasized that school budgets are estimates until state audits and that the district publishes conservative (slightly padded) estimates to avoid being required to republish if subsequent adjustments are needed.
The board will hold the revenue‑neutral hearing and an initial budget hearing on Aug. 25; the corrected budget will be published and a final adoption vote is planned for Sept. 8. The motion to grant staff authority to republish passed on roll call after discussion; one board member recorded a dissent during the vote.
