The fire chief (speaker 16) described a new partnership with the Hussman Institute for Autism to equip first responders with donated sensory kits and additional training. Brian Lester (speaker 10) said the kits include fidget toys, headphones, sunglasses and quick-reference communication cards, and that the kits and training were donated so city departments would not bear the cost.
Lester said the departments plan to equip every fire apparatus and patrol unit with a kit and provide training to better communicate with and assist people on the autism spectrum. "We're gonna get 1 on every, truck through the fire department, and then, everyone on patrol will get 1 as well," Lester said. The fire chief said the city will coordinate additional training with the local college autism center and that the initiative is donation-funded.
