Senior-center members ask council to postpone 100% membership-rate increase

Philip Thorn, speaking for a group of senior-center members, asked the council to postpone the new senior-center membership-rate structure until Jan. 1, 2027, to allow members time to review finances and consider alternatives. "The new rate structure represents approximately a 100% increase," Thorn said, adding the change will be charged per person and could disproportionately affect married couples and those on fixed incomes.
Thorn said the group requested the current and proposed senior center budgets, attendance figures, and an analysis showing how new fees would reduce general-fund support. He asked the council to consider household or married-couple rate breaks and assistance programs for members who cannot pay full price. City staff told Thorn that they had emailed the requested financial documents earlier the same day and invited the group to meet after the meeting for further discussion. The council did not take a formal vote on postponement at the meeting; staff said they will provide the data and work with members on options.
