City Administrator Brian Bullock reported the ranch submitted a certified letter alleging the city damaged a culvert used for irrigation and provided invoices totaling $12,496.76. No ranch representatives attended the meeting. After reviewing the correspondence and legal input from the city attorney, the council voted to deny the claim on a motion by Drew Dawson, seconded by Mike Taylor, carried with three aye votes. Dawson and Taylor suggested McCauley Ranches may resubmit with documentation; Taylor recommended staff research Montana Code Annotated procedures for paying such claims before any future action.
Bullock said the city had sent a certified response letter to the ranch and that the ranch’s representative picked it up. The denial does not foreclose future reconsideration if the ranch provides evidence showing city responsibility.
