The police chief updated the council on public-safety activity and staffing needs after recent festivals, reporting that festival coverage required 463.5 man-hours and that the department handled 1,354 calls for service in July.
"During the month of July, we answered the 1,354 calls for service," the police chief reported, and added totals for traffic enforcement and arrests. He said detectives contributed to a multi-state organized retail-theft investigation and that dispatch and telecommunicator staff completed certification and onboarding milestones.
The chief reported the resignation of part-time dispatcher Beth Herold, whose last day was Aug. 5. The council voted to accept Herold’s letter of resignation effective Aug. 5. Given expected additional retirements and the lengthy hiring process, the chief asked permission to begin recruitment for part-time dispatch positions; the council authorized staff to start the hiring process.
Council members noted that some festival officer hours are reimbursed by event organizers and asked staff to manage recruitment to ensure coverage during high-demand periods.
