Organizers frame Oktoberfest as veterans outreach; council approves logistical updates

Organizers of Oktoberfest told the council the event is both a community festival and a vehicle for veteran outreach, and the council approved logistical updates for the event’s first year.
"This event has the potential to become a trusted place where veterans feel comfortable showing up and asking questions," Nick Pegregon, the county veteran service officer, said, explaining how the festival’s attractions can serve as an invitation to veterans who might not otherwise seek help. Boone Taylor of Operation Mind Body and Soul said the nonprofit provides free programming and breakfast for veterans and intends Oktoberfest as part of that outreach.
Event organizers presented a site map and asked to close specified streets from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on the event day, stage the band near City Hall Friday at 8:00 a.m., and reopen South Main around 3:00 p.m. for traffic and parking. Organizers described vendor placement, handicap access and overflow arrangements with nearby parking owners; council members discussed stage footprint and safety and then affirmed the presented updates.
The council recorded the updates and no formal permit conflicts were noted.
"We would be closing those off that morning, and we'd be closing off right in front of the thing," the organizer said when reviewing the map and staging plan. Council members asked staff to check the stage footprint and coordinate with the street department for cones and closures.
