City approves move of EV charging station to River Center, raises station rate
Summary
City staff won council approval to relocate a Level 2 EV charger from the post office to the River Center parking lot and to increase the station rate from 10¢/kWh to 20¢/kWh; staff said the change responds to higher service costs and that wiring will allow a future upgrade to Level 3.

The City of Jasper voted to allow the electric department to relocate a public EV charging station from the post office to the northwest corner of the River Center parking lot and to raise the station rate from 10¢ per kilowatt-hour to 20¢ per kilowatt-hour.
“HWe are asking permission to move the charging station to the parking lot at the River Center,” Henry Calderon, the electric department representative, told the council, adding that the current site generates minimal revenue. Calderon said the city renewed its contract with ChargePoint this year and that higher service costs prompted the proposed rate increase. “Last month, we got $24 out of that,” he said, describing the post-office site’s low usage.
Council members discussed whether to invest now in wiring that would support faster chargers in the future. Calderon said staff would run sufficient wire to allow a later upgrade to a Level 3 charger if the council chose to do so. Council members noted that Level 2 chargers often serve overnight parking while Level 3 units support quicker stops for dining or errands.
Chair (S1) moved to approve the relocation and the rate change; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. Calderon told the council the electric department expects to pour a pad and relocate the machine within a few weeks. The council directed staff to coordinate any necessary updates to public charging maps and apps so users see the new location.
