County proposes facilities security coordinator; insurer to fund role

During the work session commissioners asked staff to highlight a proposed facility security coordinator included in the staffing requests. "This position will oversee access control," David said while outlining program elements including card readers, a master key system, servers, camera infrastructure and the policy work needed for courthouse security and panic‑alarm design. David said the county has over 1,000 cameras across county facilities and currently lacks a capital plan for security systems.
Patrick and other staff noted the Ottawa County Insurance Authority would pay 100 percent of the position because the insurer views the coordinator as a risk‑reduction investment. Commissioners welcomed centralizing responsibility but asked for additional detail about how the position would work with the sheriff and IT, and for clarity on ongoing operating costs.
