Councilman tells developers to hand over Revolutionary‑era finds on Kaufer Lane lot

At the March 9 public hearing Councilman Harvey Shomer, who also serves on Fort Lee's Historic Preservation Committee, asked the applicant to notify the committee if any historically significant items are found during demolition or excavation of 1639 Kaufer Lane. "If you find anything on the property that dates back to the Revolutionary War, please give it to us," he said on the record.
Mr. Shomer noted the site's location in the designated Historic District and asked the Board and the developer to take care if any discoveries are made during construction. The applicant acknowledged the comment; the Board's formal approval included standard conditions for documentation and permit coordination but did not list an archaeological requirement beyond the on‑record request from the preservation committee.
