The Trees and Public Greenery Committee on Aug. 12 considered a resident request to remove a silver maple at 11 Oak Street after roots began to lift the walkway. Staff told the committee the roots were buttressed at the trunk and root pruning could create significant structural implications that might harm the tree.
Agency staff explained the tree is in fair condition but has surface roots that would be difficult to prune without risking the tree's stability. The staff presentation noted the city does not perform sidewalk repairs on private property and that removing the tree and grinding the stump would not guarantee the resident's underlying concerns would be resolved.
Members and residents discussed possible solutions—including a raised gravel path to avoid root disturbance—and whether an ISA risk-assessment matrix could make decisions more transparent. A committee member moved to remove the tree; after discussion the motion failed and the committee agreed to continue monitoring and work with the resident and the insurer, PrimeX, to explore options.
