Waterville accepts dedication of North Shore Drive after residents ask about maintenance

The Waterville City Council adopted Resolution 2025R-021 accepting the dedication of North Shore Drive after a public hearing and comments from residents.
Resident Robert Gleason asked "what exactly would be dedicated to the City?" Administrator Teresa Hill replied that "the width of the road is 26 feet" and described the portion currently maintained by the city. City Attorney Jason Moran clarified that "the City will only deal with what is in the dedicated area," and that property owners remain responsible for trees on private land that overhang the roadway.
Homeowner Steven James asked whether the City would take a narrow strip of land between his property line and the dedicated road; Attorney Moran said a survey and legal description would be required and that donating a small parcel could be discussed but purchasing such a strip would not be an efficient use of city funds. Councilmember Dave Wollin recorded for the record that the City cannot take private land without the owner's consent. The hearing opened at 6:02 p.m. and closed at 6:12 p.m.; the council voted to accept the dedication (motion by Wollin, seconded by Potter). Motion Carried 5-0.
