District staff outline strategic-plan draft process after wide outreach; board debates metrics, sustainability and educator support

District staff presented a strategic-plan update after a broad outreach effort and proposed a drafting and public-review schedule aimed at board adoption by late June.

Mary Kay summarized engagement activities — surveys of students (grades 3–12), parents, staff, small-group listening sessions, parent clubs and student councils — and said the most consistent theme was alignment. "The biggest thing we heard, I would say... is alignment," she said, and added that while stakeholders see progress across the district’s four priorities, "no 1 said they've seen significant progress." She described families’ prioritization of academic excellence and rigor, staff concerns about workload and the need to support educators, and students’ emphasis on wellness and belonging.

Board members and student representatives discussed what academic excellence should mean in practice (critical thinking and preparation for life beyond school versus outward measures like test scores), whether sustainability should remain a separate pillar or be embedded across priorities, and how a performance-management dashboard could make outcomes and budget connections more transparent. Staff proposed drafting from March 10 through April 10, an SAC review on May 11, a final revision on June 8 and adoption on or before the June 22 board meeting.
