Police chief seeks body cams, squad cameras and evidence-room upgrades for new facility

Police Chief Robert Petrasek briefed the council on equipment and facility needs to support department operations.
Petrasek said the department is "pleased with the contract" and that a new squad vehicle is on the way. He requested body cameras estimated at $15,000 and squad cameras estimated at $23,000 as part of an Axon five-year plan; the department was considering the basic plan with optional upgrades that could cost an additional $1,000 annually. "Right now, the department is looking at the basic plan," Petrasek said. He also discussed removal of an exterior window in the evidence room and other minor remodeling needed to meet BCA security and protocol requirements for a new building.
The chief asked the council to consider purchasing a 2027 squad vehicle rather than continuing to repair an older black squad and noted Sargent Mathis and Officer Levin are scheduled for school-resource and DARE training (one training was reported as free). He also mentioned the upcoming county-led update to the LETG records system and estimated city maintenance costs at $10,000 after county investment.
