The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners voted to adopt two pilot school‑zone speed‑enforcement programs — one that issues citations and a separate safety‑enhancement program — after a brief vendor presentation and discussion about data security and enforcement resources.
"I feel like this is much needed for Pasco County. We're busy, we're growing, and kids' safety is top of the top priority," one commissioner said while moving the motion to adopt both programs. Vendor Greg Parks (Redspeed) explained that vendor-held enforcement data are typically retained for 30 days and destroyed sooner if a citation is adjudicated; he also cited a roughly 90% non‑recidivism rate after program enforcement.
Several commissioners and the chair requested contractual safeguards before broader deployment, asking that the county attorney and procurement staff review the sheriff's contract and that clear off‑ramps and data‑security language be included in any solicitation. County staff and the sheriff's office said deputies will continue targeted school‑zone enforcement where possible until the pilots are implemented.
The board's motion to adopt both programs was introduced, seconded and announced in open session; commissioners said they expect procurement language to include cancellation clauses and data‑protection terms. The county administrator noted that vendors on the dais were illustrative and that any vendor selected would be chosen through a competitive procurement process.
