Canby planners weigh how much parkland to include in UGB expansion

Commissioners pressed staff on how much parkland the city should ask to include in the proposed UGB expansion.
A commission member cited a population-based metric, saying "the 20 43 population translates to a need of 59.3 acres of developed parks." Planning staff explained that the parks advisory board and recent capital-improvement planning work identified about 73.4 acres of park need over a 20-year horizon, but staff said asking for around 26 acres as part of the UGB expansion may be more appropriate given development and maintenance considerations.
Don Hardy and Steve Faust told commissioners that parks included in exception-land areas would only become parks if the city intends to develop them; otherwise they would be developed as residential land. Staff emphasized that final determinations about park acreage and location will be refined during concept planning and after community input at the scheduled summit.
Commissioners also discussed potential coordination with the Canby School District to locate sports fields adjacent to schools to save on operations and maintenance costs.
