Hellertown Borough Council voted Feb. 17 to approve Resolution 20265, authorizing an application to the Municipal Assistance Program for a borough-wide walkability study.
The borough manager said the study would “include any kind of improvements” to sidewalks and walkability across the borough and that the application is a 50/50 match; he added the borough already has 25% of the match and will seek additional funding partners. “What we're trying to do is leverage different types of funding for the walkability study,” the manager said during council discussion.
Council members noted the project will consider problem areas including the Easton Road corridor and the downtown where sidewalks sit close to the street, and raised concerns about snow storage and pedestrian clearance in some narrow sections. A motion to approve the resolution was made, seconded and carried without recorded roll-call tallies in the transcript.
The resolution directs staff to pursue matching funds and next steps for contract procurement for the study; council did not set a construction schedule and said details would return to council once consultants identify specific improvements.
