Council adopts FY2026-27 reappropriation ordinance after school funding update

City manager Alan presented a request to amend and reappropriate funds under ordinance 8171-26 to operate Newport News for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026. He told council that on Aug. 4 the Newport News School Board amended its FY2027 budget in response to the state's final budget, increasing school operational funding to $293,492,846 — a 4.7% increase over the amended FY2026 figure — and recommended the council adopt the reappropriation to align city and school budgets.
With no public speakers on that item, the council moved, seconded and adopted the ordinance by recorded vote. The manager recommended approval and the motion carried 6-0 on the Oct. 11 agenda.
