The Detroit City Council unanimously approved the nomination of Councilor James Trett as mayor at its Jan. 13 regular meeting and administered the oath of office. Councilor Todd Smith made the nomination and Councilor Denny Nielsen seconded; no other nominations were offered and the council voted to approve the appointment with Councilor Greg Sheppard absent.
The appointment followed the council's opening procedural business and leader reassignments. Mayor Trett later delivered a brief report thanking volunteers and emergency response partners for storm recovery, saying, "I was amazed at how much equipment that was brought up and the volunteers that helped." The council scheduled its next regular session for Feb. 10, 2026.
