Lynden council adopts ordinance removing municipal authorization to add fluoride

The Lynden City Council on April 21, 2025 adopted Ordinance 25-1709, which repeals LMC 13.04.440 (Fluoridation Authorized) and Ordinance No. 371 (1959) that had authorized adding fluoride to the city water supply. The ordinance passed 5-2; Councilors Gary Vis and Brent Lenssen voted no.
Council discussion addressed background and previous notice periods: staff had posted notice to municipal water customers and the state Department of Health and met the required 90-day posting. An earlier motion to put the fluoridation question on the November ballot failed on a 3-4 vote before the adoption motion succeeded. Kahlin Mish spoke in opposition to the ordinance during the discussion.
The council record shows the ordinance was postponed previously to allow all council members to be present for the vote. The city clerk will follow standard procedures to publish or file the ordinance as required under municipal rules.
