The Lake Oswego School District 7J board adopted a resolution Tuesday to recognize May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and to encourage schools to infuse instructional learning activities about AAPI contributions across the year.
Student leaders read the "whereas" clauses that highlighted the history and contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans in Oregon. Director Gupta moved to adopt the resolution; Director Bills seconded the motion. Chair Aird called for the ayes and the motion carried.
Board members praised last month’s Lunar New Year and the student-organized Asian Cultural Festival, and student representatives said the events helped make the community more welcoming. The board’s adoption was ceremonial and intended to support classroom instruction and community recognition.
