Director says 206 Upper Long Pond gravel pit could be reopened with DEP constraints

The community economic development director told the committee she had spoken with the Department of Environmental Protection about the parcel at 206 Upper Long Pond. She said the town could expand and reopen the gravel pit on the Route 46 side but must keep topsoil on the parcel and ensure excavation stays at least 500 feet away from the former sludge site.
"The gravel pit can be expanded and reopened," the director said, adding that she did not know what materials lay beneath the surface and that reclamation rules would require topsoil to remain on site. Committee members discussed defining and mapping the protected sludge area before taking further steps.
The director said the matter will be included on the council agenda for Thursday for formal consideration and next steps with DEP guidance.
