Tempe highlights ADU standard-plan library, AARP grant to aid aging-in-place

City planners said aging-in-place is a priority in Corona South Tempe because the area has a somewhat older median age and that character area principles can include policies to support older residents.
Jacob Payne described a recently created standard plan library for accessory dwelling units funded by an AARP grant: "towards the end of last year, we were granted some grant money from AARP to develop this library, for what is essentially kind of backyard house units..." Payne said the standard plans reduce cost and construction time for homeowners interested in adding smaller backyard units for relatives or rental income. Lucas Jensen added that making ADU allowance simpler is a major planning tool for supporting aging-in-place and said he would post contact information for Tempe's Age Friendly Team.
