The Vernal City Council on May 27 approved renewal of the city’s dental and vision plans after staff presented cost projections and utilization data. Human Resources Manager Jenny Brailsford told the council the proposed dental increase — "approximately nineteen percent" — was largely driven by higher employee utilization and claims. Finance Director Nick Rousseau and City Manager Quinn Bennion said the city will continue its health plan with Select Health and highlighted that Select Health has returned about half of unused premium savings to the city in prior years.
Councilmember Ted Munford moved to approve the renewals and Councilmember Ed Long seconded; the motion passed in a roll call recorded in the minutes. Bennion proposed allocating roughly $17,000 of projected Select Health premium savings toward a December premium holiday for employees, an idea the mayor supported and councilmembers asked staff to clearly communicate.
