Omak council approves fireworks ordinance amendment; one member votes no

The Omak City Council on June 15 approved Ordinance No. 1967, an amendment to Omak Municipal Code Chapter 8.24 that clarifies and tightens the city's fireworks ban. Fire Chief Jeremy Patrick told the council the ordinance "is cleaning up and adding language to give a clear understanding on a ban." The ordinance is scheduled to take effect one year from the date of adoption.
Councilmember Michelle Gaines voted against the ordinance, expressing concern that the city's emergency declaration authority would allow the mayor to impose a ban without returning to the Council for approval. City Administrator Todd McDaniel told the council the draft followed guidance from the Municipal Research and Services Center (MRSC) and had been reviewed by City Attorney Kenyon.
