Commissioner Mile elected chair; Commissioner Sophia Jackson chosen vice chair

The Wake County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Mile as chair and Commissioner Sophia Jackson as vice chair during its Dec. 1, 2025 meeting.
Clerk Yvonne Gilliard called for nominations for chair. A commissioner who identified themself on the record as "Commissioner Mile" nominated themself; after district votes were taken, Clerk Gilliard announced "so that with 4 votes, Commissioner Mile becomes the chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners."
After accepting the gavel, Commissioner Mile said they would "preside over the remainder of the meeting" and outlined priorities including libraries, public safety and strengthening the county's relationship with the Wake County Public School System. "We have the best relationship that we have had with our Wake County public school system in quite some time," Commissioner Mile said, and urged continued support for libraries and students.
The board then conducted a separate district vote for vice chair. Commissioner Sophia Jackson accepted the nomination and received four votes to Commissioner Stallings's three, and was declared vice chair.
The board moves into the new leadership year with a stated focus on sustaining relationships with schools, continuing investments in libraries, and prioritizing public safety initiatives. The board recessed briefly after the elections before continuing the evening's business.
